Dr. Veronica Cateté

Biography

Dr. Veronica Cateté is a dedicated computer science educator and researcher with a focus on K-12 education and field experiences in engineering education. She currently serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at North Carolina State University, where she has also held the position of Research Scientist. A two-time graduate of the department, Dr. Cateté is the second Latina to earn a Ph.D. from NCSU in Computer Science.

Dr. Cateté directs several programs aimed at fostering STEM education and research, including the CSC summer high school internship program (go.ncsu.edu/cs-intern-info), the Socially Relevant Computing and Analytics Research Experience for Teachers, and Research Experience for Undergraduates programs (go.ncsu.edu/srca-reu). Additionally, she co-leads a study abroad experience in Rwanda, where participants engage in computing and hands-on STEM activities in local primary and secondary schools.

Dr. Cateté has received numerous awards and recognition for her contributions to local and international computing education, outreach, and research. She is an Associate Editor for the ACM Transactions on Computing Education Journal. She is also a member of the Global Engagement Institute at NC State and teaches undergraduate research methods as well as graduate-level engineering education courses. She serves as the faculty advisor to the student chapter of Students & Technology in Academia, Research, and Service (STARS).

As a graduate student, Dr. Cateté was a recipient of both the National Science Foundation’s Graduate Research Fellowship and the Microsoft Research Graduate Women’s Scholarship. To learn more about her career journey, please refer to her interview with the Friday Institute.
